Green Corners Covent Garden London

The 2008 Green Corners Awards organised by The Conservation Foundation and sponsored by Covent Garden London were announced at a colourful and well attended event held in the Central Market building at Covent Garden on 13 October 2008.

The world’s best known ‘garden’ was filled with award winning London gardeners for the presentation of London’s Green Corners Awards. The presentation, at which the Conservation Foundation’s president David Bellamy was a speaker, took place in a specially created Green Corner within the world famous former fruit and vegetable market.

Thirty or so awards were made to individuals and organisations from across London who had worked hard to create new and enhance existing green spaces ranging from window boxes to public parks.

The annual competition is unusual because, while a number of entries are submitted, a large proportion are nominated by others who are often neighbours of or even unknown to the person who is subsequently recommended for consideration as an Award winner.

The Conservation Foundation was founded in 1982 by David Shreeve and David Bellamy to provide a means for people in public, private and not-for-profit sectors to collaborate on environmental causes.

Since its inception, The Foundation has created and managed a wide range of environmental initiatives, often with the support of commercial partners. Over the years its programme has included award schemes, conferences, promotions, special events, field studies, school programmes, media work, seminars and workshops etc.

The Foundation, one of the first organisations to link business and the environment, celebrated its Silver Anniversary in 2007.
