Waste
The disposal of waste, largely generated by our retailers, is a major environmental impact over which we can exert a positive influence, and we continue to make every effort to improve our management of this area of our business. Effective waste management also serves to reduce our carbon footprint.
In the 2008 reporting period, 11 of our centres handled 21,877 tonnes of waste, of which 42% was recycled, 21% incinerated with energy recovery and the remaining 37% was sent to landfill. For the first time since we started reporting data on our recycling activities, the proportion of waste recycled exceeds that which is sent to landfill. A landmark that we are pleased to pass.
The twelfth centre, Eldon Square Newcastle, previously did not manage its waste, but as part of the redevelopment process we have been able to introduce an integrated waste management system for part of the centre in late 2008, with plans to introduce the same system to the remainder during 2009.
A summary of trends in waste management performance indicators over the past four years is provided in the performance indicator section. Waste data at our directly managed centres is provided by a specialist contractor, and is subject to our internal audit procedures, whilst Arndale and Cribbs Causeway have also been audited during the past three years as part of our verification process.
No specific targets were set for the period, other than to maximise recycling. The tables below show the aggregate performance over the period 2004 to 2008. The focus for 2009 is to maintain and improve on these recycling rates, whilst working with retailers to encourage not only further recycling, but to work increasingly towards waste minimisation.
Each Centre has been provided with bespoke advice and guidance on how best to increase further recycling over and above the high levels already achieved. Plans are also advanced to gain improved integration into our values from our outsourced service partners to assist us in waste minimisation and recycling.
At the office properties, including our head office, Capital & Counties continues to promote waste recycling and encourages its occupiers to participate accordingly. In-built recycling facilities are introduced at all new developments and major refurbishments.
